I wanted to get your opinion on something. I just had a call from someone claiming to be from (I think) Microsoft to tell me that MS has been receiving some information from my system about some online hacking that is affecting my computer/hard drive. My red flag went up right away, as I don’t really believe MS does individual outbound calling for this type of thing. He said that the “online hacking files” were on my computer and something needed to be done about it. I pushed back further, and he told me to disconnect from the internet if I was concerned. He then wanted me to enter “eventvwr” into my run screen – supposedly to check that these hacking files were there. At this point, I again told him I was not comfortable with this and that I wanted to speak to my local IT expert (i.e., youJ) before going any further. He told me that he was a “Cisco-certified Microsoft technician” and that no local technician can do this. He stared to sound irritated, so I ended the call.
Did I do the right thing? Should I be concerned about anything on my computer? I had a similar call a few months ago, which I also ended.
